Did you know that the white picket fence was originally associated with wealth in Colonial times? Whitewash was expensive, so only the well-off could afford to keep their fences white. When mass production lowered the cost of fences, and the middle class became wealthier, the white picket fence became a symbol of a prosperous home in suburban American.
