Leaning Tower of Pisa

If I were to travel to Italy, I might see a ….

#doodlewashApril2022 prompt: Tower.

Did you know it took 199 years to build the Leaning Tower of Pisa? This is partially because the Republic of Pisa joined so many battles they had to stop building, and it turns out this was a good thing.  The earth in Pisa is so marshy that it caused the tower (and other buildings in the area) to lean.  Those breaks in building allowed the structure to settle.  If built in one go, it’s believed the building would have fallen long ago.

Now didn’t I say I was going to keep the paintings in this book simple? And then I go and choose a reference with intricate patterns and difficult perspective. I could have chosen much simpler references, but I liked the challenge of taking something more difficult and simplifying it. I only used three colors, and I very much simplified the pattern. I drew in the building with masking fluid and painted around to help keep my whites, and just painted around it in easy strokes. It probably took 10-15 minutes to decide how I’d do it, 10 minutes to apply the masking fluid, a combined time of 15-20 minutes drying, and maybe 10 minutes of actually painting, lol.

One day I might do painting again and really do it justice, but I did enjoy working out the puzzle of how to do this in a short time without stressing about it.
