… a gouache tutorial where I’ll be teaching simple paintings done in a poster-art style. I’m not posting as often as usual, and I thought I’d share some of the reason why.
You may be familiar with the poster art style, even if you don’t realize it. Those paint-by-numbers you did as a child are one example. Many of Art Nouveau and Art Deco and those vintage Orange Crate labels were done in poster art style. And you may be familiar with Travel Posters.
While gouache is a flexible medium capable of creating a wide range of styles, if is often associated with poster art. In fact, you may have used gouache – again, even if you don’t realize it. Ever used poster paint? A very poor, cheap version of gouache.
If all goes as planned this will be a three-part tutorial. The first part will cover painting in gouache, the poster art style and show you three very simple, slightly silly paintings to practice with.
Something like the paintings in this post.
The second part will cover using a reference photo and transforming it into the poster art style. The painting will be a slightly more complex one of a Vermillion Flycatcher.
The third part will build on the first two, still in the poster art style but building something more complex than what we’ve done before. I haven’t decided yet what the painting will be.
