Did you know that during courtship male cardinals feed the females seeds “beak to beak”? It looks a lot like kissing!
I’m not a big fan of red. I need to use it more often, because I struggle to know how to use it.

Beautiful cardinal, Sandra!!! I feel the same way about red.
Many thanks, Mary! It’s so funny. I like red in real life, but I hate painting with it. Maybe because it so quickly dominates everything.
look at him standing regally against the snow! beautiful!
Thank you, Alice!
I’ve only seen a cardinal a couple of times in Missouri. They are so beautiful and you nailed this red beauty in the snow. That background sky is ominous and I can feel the chill in the air!
Thank you, Judy! I don’t think I’ve ever seen one in real life. If I did, I was too young to remember!
Fluffed against the cold – I think this cardinal is thinking less of love than of flying to Florida. You use red perfectly – a vivid splash against the foil of the storm.
Many thanks, Sharon! One of the joys of gouache is how well neutrals work, creating a great contrast to brighter colors.
