This is a case where the scan looks better than the actual piece. I picked up a glow that isn’t really there.
I used watercolor on black paper. I’ve done this successfully before, but I don’t think it was the right combination for the what I was trying to do. I just kept fussing and finally decided I need to walk away. I think I’ll start over rather than trying to get this to go the way I want it too.
But now I know!

I don’t know…..I think it is beautiful!! I love the clouds. I love the water. I love the color cominations.
Wow! I think it’s truly spectacular. Maybe you need to look at this with less expectation and more of an open mind, as if you walked into a studio and this was the first artwork you saw. I could look at this one all day and not get bored.
Thank you so much, Sharon! I’m not unhappy with it. It was an experiment to determine more about the difference between gouache and opaque watercolor. However, the scan picked up what I wanted, whereas in real life you don’t see all that color. It’s still okay, just more dull. What’s really strange is that the scan has the right colors – I think it just filtered out some of the black.
Maybe the black created too much contrast in such small areas and the scan couldn’t pick it up accurately?
That is possible. I haven’t had a problem before but then I haven’t painted the paper so completely with opaque watercolor – I’ve done more stylized with lots of black showing and just small area of color.
Beautiful! One can almost feel the moisture in the breeze. Make that wind because it looks like the clouds are moving quickly.

Many thanks, Lori! It isn’t bad, just more dull than it looks in the scan. I know it would have been brighter with gouache.
