Tanglescape-Zebra Technical Pen on Hahnemühle Nostalgie Postcard
Well, this was meant to be a quick sketch like the ones I did while having breakfast with Mom. It didn’t really take much longer, but I did use better quality materials than I did while with her.
It has a more polished look and even as I did it, I knew it wasn’t going to come out quite the same.
I guess it is all in the mind and habit. When away from home, knowing I could be interrupted at any time, I draw faster and rougher.
In the long run, I don’t think it matters. It’s good practice, and keeps the mind thinking about how to create those shapes and details. I don’t know if I’ll do these every morning, but inktober is coming up, and I probably will for that month, at least.
nice landscape – and I see printemps 🙂
I’d love to walk into this landscape.Sinuous and lithe with just enough spiky shapes to keep it from becoming boring. Do you ever go back and add paint to your pen and ink art?
Thank you, Sharon! Yes, I do add color a lot of the time, though for this kind of work I prefer to add color before. I may go back and add color to this one yet.
Interesting approach, to paint first and then tangle it up. I do lots of pen scribbling (I’m not a good listener so doodling or folding tiny pieces of paper allows me to be more attentive) but I still haven’t worked with ink first and then watercolored on my art. My watercolor art has no ink work at all. Though I have used sepia inks to paint with. Did a series of autumn leaves this way – still, no pen and ink work.
Line and wash comes naturally to me because I’ve done pen work all my life. If I’m doing something realistic, I do the ink first, but when I do tangle/ abstract type work, I prefer to color abstractly and then ink. I think it’s more freeing, and the colors inspire your drawing. I like to paint with no ink at all sometimes, but for small work like postcards it’s faster and easier to handle detail.
I’ll have to start applying the name ‘tanglescape’ to pieces I create that are similar to this.
I’ve spent some enjoyable time drawing imaginary landscapes like this.
You may have inspired to create another one 🙂
Thank you! I’m hoping you will create another one … or two … or fify!
I might just do that! 😀
