I like the Multicolor Ecoline Watercolor Brush Pen Set so much that I decided to get more colors. (You can also find my review of the Hahnemühle Report & Art Book here).

Before I get into that, I wanted to share that a wonderful friend pointed out that these pens are refillable, the nibs can be reversed when the first side wears down, and you can dip the pens into the bottles of Ecoline ink (yes! These beautiful colors come in bottled inks as well!) in order to blend colors, and the pen nibs will clean themselves after a few strokes.

These really are nice pen sets!

I bought the:

Earth set

  • Yellow
  • Saffron Yellow
  • Yellow Ochre
  • Gold Ochre
  • Deep Ochre

Pastel set

  • Pastel Rose
  • Pastel Green
  • Pastel Blue
  • Pastel Violet
  • Cold Grey Light

I absolutely love the Earth set.  The colors are rich and vibrant yet still earthy and the colors move and blend like watercolors should.

The Pastel set has some beautiful colors … except … grey?  What about yellow.  You really need yellow.  And while I didn’t expect these colors to be deep and intense – they are pastel, after all – I was expecting the watercolor effect.  These colors didn’t move much, they are a lot more like using markers.  Still beautiful, especially when used with colors in the other sets.

  1. Sandra, Wonderful self portrait , an the colours are perfect. Like the effect the Ecoline Watercolor Brush Pen’s give. Very free style with the use of the outlining, pops the painting. Beautiful work. I’m also surprised about the new information an perhaps your friend can provide us how to go about obtaining the Ink. Plus I’m glad you mentioned about the pastel set, i’ve only ever come across the Earth sets. My Tombows work about the same way an blend, but don’t have the luxury of being refilled, so once its done with, out to buy another one.

    1. Thank you! The Ecoline pens spread more across the paper than Tombows, acting more like watercolor paint. The inks are available on Amazon and probably many other stores, because Royal Talens, who distributes the brand is found in many stores. I don’t use bottled ink too often, because I’m a klutz. It isn’t a matter of ‘if’ I will spill but rather a matter of when. Still, I’ll probably buy bottles of my favorites colors for these pens rather than buying new pens.

  2. Nice, Sandra.
